HEPArated

HEPArated is a proposed framework for high-energy physics data management that aims to label and assess datasets and analysis workflows using standardized quality metrics, provenance information, and metadata. The goal is to improve discoverability, comparability, and reproducibility of results across experiments and analyses.

The framework centers on a three-tier rating system—Gold, Silver, and Bronze—based on metadata completeness, data quality flags, calibration documentation, and the integrity of software and processing history. HEPArated prescribes a core metadata schema covering experiment name, run identifiers, detector configuration, calibration records, data quality flags, software versions, and processing steps. Each dataset is accompanied by a manifest with persistent identifiers, checksums, and lineage information to enable reproducibility.

Development and governance: HEPArated emerged from international discussions among laboratories and collaborations in the early 2020s. A community-driven working group proposes reference implementations, tooling, and best practices. The project seeks to integrate with existing data formats used in high-energy physics, such as ROOT and HDF5, and to align with FAIR data principles.

Impact and adoption: If widely adopted, HEPArated could streamline cross-experiment data reuse, meta-analyses, and independent validation. It is intended to complement, not replace, existing data management practices. As of now, pilot projects explore its feasibility, with varying levels of uptake and resource requirements.

Challenges: The effort requires sustained funding, community coordination, and agreement on metadata standards and privacy policies. It also faces the burden of maintaining versioned datasets and keeping tooling compatible with evolving software ecosystems.
