HEFrags

HEFrags, short for "High Explosive Fragments," are a type of explosive ammunition designed to deliver a high concentration of small, lethal fragments over a wide area. They are commonly used in artillery, mortars, and some anti-tank weapons to maximize damage against personnel, light vehicles, and fortifications. The primary purpose of HEFrags is to create a lethal "kill zone" by dispersing fragments capable of penetrating body armor and causing severe injuries or fatalities.

The casing of a HEFrag shell is typically made of a brittle metal, such as steel or brass, which shatters upon detonation. Inside, the shell contains a high explosive charge, such as TNT or Composition B, which is initiated by a fuse or proximity sensor. Upon detonation, the casing fragments into thousands of small, razor-sharp pieces that scatter in all directions. The effectiveness of HEFrags depends on the density of fragments, their velocity, and the energy they carry upon impact.

HEFrags are widely employed in military operations due to their versatility and cost-effectiveness. They are particularly effective against unarmored or lightly armored targets, as well as for area denial and suppression tactics. However, their indiscriminate nature can also result in collateral damage, making them controversial in certain contexts. Modern advancements have led to the development of precision-guided HEFrag munitions, which improve accuracy and reduce unintended civilian casualties.

In addition to conventional military use, HEFrags have applications in law enforcement and civil defense scenarios, such as riot control or counter-terrorism operations. Training and safety protocols are critical when handling HEFrag ammunition due to its destructive potential.
