Gütern

Gütern is a fictional municipality in the Veridian Highlands of Veridia. It sits in a gentle valley beside the Güter River and covers about 15 square kilometers. The landscape mixes arable fields with forests, and the climate is temperate, with warm summers and cool, damp winters. The population is around 4,200.

Historically, Gütern grew from a medieval hamlet. It obtained town rights in the 14th century and remained largely agricultural for centuries. The 19th century brought small weaving workshops, laying the groundwork for a diversified local economy that persists alongside services and crafts. Several historic buildings, including a late-Gothic church, survive today.

Governance follows a mayor–council system. The 12-member council is elected every four years, and the mayor acts as chief executive. Gütern participates in regional associations for planning and public services.

Economy centers on agriculture—apples, grains, and dairy—alongside small manufacturing and local commerce. Tourism focuses on rural landscapes, hiking, and heritage sites. The town is connected by regional roads; the nearest railway is in Wagenstadt, about 12 kilometers away, with regular bus service.

Cultural life centers on the Gütern Church of St. Mary, a 15th-century landmark, and a historic market square. An annual harvest festival attracts visitors from neighboring areas. A local library and a primary school serve residents; secondary schooling is pursued in Wagenstadt.
