Göndörleme

Göndörleme is an ancient Turkish folk art originating from the Black Sea region, specifically in the provinces of Trabzon, Rize, and Artvin. The word "göndörleme" translates to "taliism" or "magical stitch" in English.

This traditional art involves a type of hand-stitching where the seamstress creates intricate designs and patterns using fine threads. The characteristic stitch is a single thread stitch, known as the "göndörleme" stitch, which requires great skill and precision to execute. The stitch is typically worked on summer dresses, referred to as "ermeskür" or "summercür", designed for young girls to wear during the summer months.

Göndörleme is considered an art form in its own right, with many variations and nuances depending on the region and individual craftswoman. Each stitch and pattern has a specific meaning, often related to good fortune, prosperity, and protection from evil spirits. The designs may include floral patterns, Arabic calligraphy, and geometric shapes, each carefully selected to convey a specific message or intention.

Göndörleme is also closely tied to the regional culture and folklore of the Black Sea region. The craftswomen were often village women, who would spend their spare time stitching and selling their handiwork at local markets. Göndörleme is considered an important part of the region's cultural heritage, with efforts being made to preserve the traditional techniques and promote this unique folk art globally.
