Gyümölcslegyek, commonly known as fruit flies, are small insects belonging to the family Drosophilidae. These tiny flies are often found in kitchens, around fruit bowls, and near fermenting organic matter. Their life cycle is remarkably short, with adults emerging from eggs within a couple of weeks under favorable conditions. This rapid reproduction contributes to their widespread presence, especially during warmer months.

The diet of fruit flies primarily consists of yeasts and bacteria that grow on ripe or decaying fruits and vegetables. They are attracted to the sweet, fermenting odors produced by these foods. While generally considered a nuisance rather than a significant health hazard, their presence can indicate unsanitary conditions. They can be attracted to spilled sugary drinks, garbage cans, and even drains where food particles may accumulate.

Controlling fruit fly populations typically involves eliminating their food sources and breeding grounds. This includes regularly cleaning surfaces, properly storing fruits and vegetables, and emptying trash bins. Simple traps, often made with vinegar or wine as bait in a container with small openings, can also be effective in reducing their numbers. Their small size and rapid life cycle make them a persistent challenge for homeowners and food establishments alike.
