Gymnophthalminae
Gymnophthalminae is a subfamily of lizards within the family Gymnophthalmidae. These are generally small to medium-sized, slender-bodied lizards found in Central and South America. A defining characteristic of many species within this subfamily is the presence of transparent eyelids, or spectacles, which allow them to see with their eyes closed, similar to snakes. This feature is the origin of their subfamily name, which derives from the Greek words "gymnos" meaning naked and "ophthalmos" meaning eye.
Gymnophthalmines are primarily terrestrial or semi-arboreal and inhabit a variety of environments, from rainforests to savannas.
