Gunma

Gunma Prefecture is located in the Kantō region of Japan. It is landlocked and bordered by Niigata Prefecture to the north, Tochigi to the east, Saitama to the south, and Nagano to the west. The capital is Maebashi, and other major cities include Takasaki, Ōta, Isesaki, and Kiryu. The prefecture has a population of about 1.9 million.

Geography and nature: The western interior is mountainous, including parts of the Joshinetsu Kogen National Park and peaks such as Mount Akagi, Mount Haruna, and Mount Myōgi. The eastern region contains plains along the Tone and other rivers. The climate varies with elevation, ranging from cool winters with snow in the highlands to warm summers in the plains.

History and economy: The area was part of the old province of Kōzuke. During the Meiji era, the Tomioka Silk Mill, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, symbolized industrial modernization. Today Gunma has diversified industries, including manufacturing (notably automotive parts and textiles) and agriculture (rice, konnyaku, vegetables).

Culture and tourism: Gunma is famous for onsen towns such as Kusatsu and Ikaho, and for outdoor recreation in Minakami. The Tomioka Silk Mill and related sites reflect its industrial heritage. Seasonal events include the Takasaki Daruma Ichi festival in January, when thousands of daruma dolls are purchased as symbols of good luck.

Transport: Rail services include JR East lines in Takasaki, Maebashi, and Minakami, with the Jōetsu Shinkansen stopping at Takasaki. The Kan-Etsu Expressway and national routes provide road access across the prefecture.
