The goal is to make the target feel obligated to comply with the manipulator's wishes to alleviate their own sense of guilt.

Common tactics employed in guilttrips include passive-aggressive comments, reminders of past favors or sacrifices, expressions of distress or martyrdom, and comparisons to others who are perceived as more compliant or caring. For instance, someone might say, "After all I've done for you, you can't do this one small thing?" or "I guess I'll just have to manage on my own, then." These statements are designed to make the recipient feel selfish or ungrateful if they do not yield.

Recognizing guilttrips involves identifying the underlying pressure to act against one's own will or better judgment due to feelings of obligation or shame. It is important to differentiate between genuine expressions of need and attempts to manipulate through guilt.
