Unhappiness is a subjective state characterized by negative affect, dissatisfaction, or a sense that life conditions fall short of expectations. In everyday usage it lies on a continuum with happiness and can vary across moments, days, or longer periods. Unlike clinical concepts, unhappiness by itself is not a medical diagnosis.

Distinguishing mood from emotion: unhappiness can be a mood—longer-lasting and less tied to a specific event—or a transient emotional state. When it persists for months or years and impairs functioning, it may contribute to or accompany clinical conditions, such as depression, though it is not itself a disorder.

Causes are multifactorial, including biological factors (sleep, energy balance, neurotransmitter activity), psychological factors (cognitive styles, rumination, coping skills), and social or environmental factors (unemployment, relationship problems, discrimination, poverty). Cultural norms can also shape what is perceived as unhappiness and how it is expressed.

Measurement and research: researchers assess unhappiness through self-report scales of mood, affect, and life satisfaction, as well as methods like the day reconstruction method or experience sampling. Economic studies sometimes examine happiness in relation to income, social connectedness, and well-being.

Effects: persistent unhappiness can affect physical health, motivation, and social relationships, and may influence behavior such as withdrawal or reduced engagement in activities. It is a common human experience and can motivate change or reflect unmet needs.

Coping and management: strategies include strengthening social support, engaging in meaningful activities, physical exercise, adequate sleep, and, for persistent cases, professional help such as psychotherapy or counseling. Mindfulness and cognitive-behavioral techniques may help reframe thoughts and improve mood.
