Grimes

Grimes, born Claire Elise Boucher on March 17, 1988, is a Canadian musician, singer, songwriter, and producer who performs under the name Grimes. She emerged from the Montreal electronic music scene and is known for blending synth-pop, dream pop, industrial, and experimental electronics. She studied neuroscience at McGill University before pursuing music full-time.

Her early work was self-released, including Geidi Primes and Halfaxa in 2010, which helped establish her as an independent artist with a distinctive, otherworldly sound. She drew attention from record labels and signed with 4AD, releasing Visions in 2012. Visions received widespread critical acclaim and featured the popular track Oblivion, noted for its lush atmospherics and intimate vocals. The album solidified Grimes as a leading figure in contemporary alternative pop and electronic music.

Art Angels, released in 2015, broadened her approach with brighter production and a more eclectic, genre-spanning sensibility. Miss Anthropocene, issued in 2020, presented a concept album centered on climate change and apocalyptic imagery, accompanied by a suite of visually elaborate videos and performances. Grimes is also known for prolific visual art, music videos, and collaborations, often integrating technology, fashion, and multimedia elements into her work.

In her personal life, Grimes and entrepreneur Elon Musk welcomed a son, named X Æ A-12 at birth in 2020, later publicly stylized as X AE A-XII. Beyond her studio projects, she continues to influence the indie and electronic music landscapes through experimental releases, live performances, and cross-disciplinary collaborations.
