Synthpop, short for synthesizer pop, is a genre of popular music that emerged in the late 1970s and reached mainstream prominence in the early 1980s. It centers on the use of synthesizers and electronic instruments, often combined with pop song structures. The movement developed in the United Kingdom and Europe, drawing on the experimental electronics of Kraftwerk and other predecessors, as well as disco and post-punk influences. Early acts such as Kraftwerk, Ultravox, and The Human League helped establish the template, later joined by Yazoo, Soft Cell, OMD, Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, and Erasure.

Musically, synthpop emphasizes electronic textures, programmed drum patterns, sequenced basslines, arpeggios, and melodic hooks. Production often features layered synthesizers, crisp electronic percussion, and effects such as reverb and chorus. Vocals range from resonant and melodic to processed or robotic timbres. The genre benefited from affordable analogue synthesizers in the 1980s and later from digital workstations and MIDI, enabling widespread home and studio production.

During the early 1980s, synthpop played a major role in the rise of MTV and the visual presentation of electronic music, with technologically oriented imagery and fashion. While its mainstream visibility waned in the mid-to-late 1980s as other styles gained popularity, it persisted through acts in both pop and alternative scenes. The late 1990s and 2000s saw a revival and reinterpretation of synthpop, often labeled electropop or synthwave, with artists blending retro aesthetics with contemporary production.
