Grenzers
Grenzers were soldiers of the Habsburg Monarchy who served on the Military Frontier, a system of border districts established to defend against the Ottoman Empire. The term Grenzer derives from the German gren(z) meaning border. The Frontier stretched across areas that are part of present-day Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, and parts of Hungary. From the 16th century onward, Grenzer troops formed the main garrison units in frontier regiments, organized into Grenz infantry and Grenz cavalry, and were recruited primarily from Croats of the Krajina, with Serbs and other South Slavic groups contributing as well.
