Grenzer
Grenzer is a German term meaning "borderer" or "border guard" (from Grenze, "border") and historically refers most prominently to the frontier troops of the Habsburg Monarchy known as the Grenz infantry. Raised from populations living in the Military Frontier (Militärgrenze) — areas of present-day Croatia, Serbia, and Romania — Grenzer units emerged from the sixteenth century as light infantry and irregular militias formed to resist Ottoman incursions. Recruited largely from local Serb, Croat and Vlach communities, they were granted land, privileges and a degree of self-administration in return for military service.
