Gravírozást, or engraving, is a technique of incising a design onto a hard, flat surface by cutting grooves into it. This process can be done by hand using a sharp tool, or by machine, employing methods like laser engraving or mechanical milling. The resulting incised lines can then be filled with ink or other materials to make the design stand out, or the surface itself can be left as is to create a textural or reflective effect.

Historically, engraving was a crucial method for creating printing plates, particularly in the art of intaglio printing. Artists and craftsmen have used engraving for centuries to decorate a wide variety of objects. This includes precious metals like gold and silver for jewelry and decorative items, as well as less precious materials such as wood, glass, and stone. Personalization is a common application, with names, dates, or messages being engraved onto trophies, plaques, weapons, and personal belongings.

Modern engraving techniques offer precision and speed previously unattainable. Laser engraving utilizes a focused laser beam to vaporize or melt away material from the surface, allowing for intricate and detailed designs. Mechanical engraving uses rotating cutting tools to carve the material. Both methods are widely employed in industrial settings for marking parts, creating signage, and in the production of decorative and functional items.
