Graphemecolor, often described as grapheme-color perception, is a form of synesthesia in which individual graphemes—letters and digits—evoke stable, automatic color experiences. For an affected person, a letter like A might consistently appear red and B blue, with the specific color mapping varying between individuals. The experience is perceived rather than imagined and typically begins in childhood. It is not a learned association and not a disorder; most researchers classify it as a type of synesthesia within a broad continuum of sensory cross-activations.

Prevalence estimates vary by method, but grapheme-color synesthesia is relatively rare, occurring in a minority of people. The phenomenon is typically lifelong and remains stable over time; many individuals report that the colors are evoked automatically upon perception of the grapheme, though the strength and vividness can fluctuate with attention, mood, or context.

Neurobiological studies point to increased cross-activation between regions involved in grapheme recognition (such as the visual word form area in the fusiform gyrus) and color processing areas (such as area V4). Genetic components and familial clustering have been observed, suggesting heritability and multiple contributing factors.
