Graphemes and letters are fundamental concepts in the study of writing systems. A grapheme is the smallest unit in a writing system that can convey a distinct meaning or sound. It is an abstract unit that may be realized in printed form by one or more graphic symbols. A letter, by contrast, is a symbol used within a particular script or alphabet to represent a phoneme. In many cases a grapheme is just a single letter, but graphemes can also be multi-letter sequences or symbols with diacritics.

Because a grapheme can be formed by more than one character, the relationship between graphemes and phonemes is not always one-to-one. For example, in English the digraph “ph” can represent the phoneme /f/, and the digraph “ch” can represent a single sound /tʃ/. Diacritics also create graphemes that differ from their base letters, such as é or ñ, which signal distinct sounds or distinctions in pronunciation in languages like French and Spanish.

Different writing systems handle graphemes in diverse ways. In alphabetic scripts like the Latin alphabet, letters are often treated as single graphemes, though many languages use digraphs or longer sequences as units. Some languages treat a single written symbol as a single letter even if it is composed of multiple code points or diacritic marks. In non-alphabetic systems, such as Chinese, a character can be viewed as a grapheme representing a morpheme or word.

In digital text processing, grapheme concepts underpin character encoding and rendering. Unicode and related technologies use ideas like grapheme clusters to model how users perceive characters, which affects tasks such as segmentation, rendering, and search.
