Goeppertia is a genus of flowering plants in the family Marantaceae, native to tropical regions of the Americas. The genus comprises numerous species that were previously classified within Calathea; taxonomic revisions in recent decades recognized Goeppertia as a distinct group to reflect phylogenetic relationships. Plants in this genus are commonly grown for their ornamental foliage.

Goeppertia species are herbaceous, rhizomatous perennials. They typically bear large leaves on short petioles, with blade shapes ranging from oval to oblong. The leaves often feature striking patterns and color contrasts, with veins and margins forming bold designs; many species have purple or reddish undersides. Many members exhibit nyctinasty, a movement pattern where leaves fold or tilt at night.

Habitat and distribution: Goeppertia plants occur in tropical rainforest understories, requiring warm, humid conditions. Their native range extends across parts of Central and South America, from Mexico to Argentina, including the Caribbean.

Cultivation and care: In cultivation, Goeppertia is valued as an ornamental foliage plant. They prefer bright, indirect light and high humidity, with temperatures generally ranging from 18 to 27°C. The soil should be well-draining and kept evenly moist but not waterlogged. Fertilization is typically light and during the growing season. They respond well to high humidity and stable temperatures.

Propagation is commonly by division of clumps or offsets, typically in spring. Toxicity is similar to other Araceae, containing calcium oxalate crystals; ingestion can irritate the mouth and digestive tract, so keep plants out of reach of pets and children.
