Globefish

Globefish is a common name for several species of fish belonging to the family Tetraodontidae. These fish are renowned for their ability to inflate their bodies into a ball shape as a defense mechanism against predators. When threatened, globefish rapidly ingest water or air, causing their elastic stomachs to expand dramatically, making them appear much larger and more difficult to swallow. This defensive strategy is often accompanied by the fish protruding sharp spines, further deterring attackers.

Globefish are found in warm seas around the world, inhabiting both tropical and subtropical waters. They are typically bottom-dwellers, often found in coral reefs, rocky areas, and seagrass beds. Their diet varies depending on the species but commonly includes invertebrates such as mollusks, crustaceans, and worms, as well as some algae.

A notable characteristic of many globefish species is the presence of tetrodotoxin, a potent neurotoxin. This toxin is concentrated in the fish's internal organs, particularly the liver and ovaries. While highly poisonous to most animals, including humans, tetrodotoxin does not affect the fish itself. Despite the danger, certain species of globefish, such as the fugu, are considered a delicacy in Japanese cuisine, prepared by highly trained chefs who are licensed to remove the toxic parts. Consuming improperly prepared globefish can be fatal.
