The gletscherkante is a dynamic feature, constantly changing in response to glacial flow, melting rates, and accumulation of snow.

The appearance of a gletscherkante can vary significantly. It may present as a steep, towering wall of ice, particularly in tidewater glaciers that calve icebergs into the sea. In other cases, it can be a more gently sloping area of ice and debris, especially where the glacier is retreating or terminating on land. A receding gletscherkante signifies that the glacier is melting and losing mass faster than it is accumulating snow, a common observation in many glaciers worldwide due to rising global temperatures.
