Gjennomaksel

Gjennomaksel is a Norwegian term that translates to "through axle" in English. It refers to a specific type of bicycle axle that passes entirely through the hub of a wheel. Unlike older quick-release systems where the axle is clamped by levers, a through axle is threaded and screws into the frame or fork. This design provides a more rigid and secure connection between the wheel and the bicycle.

The primary advantage of a through axle is increased stiffness. This stiffness translates to better handling, improved braking performance, and a more stable ride, especially under demanding conditions like aggressive downhill riding or when carrying heavy loads. The larger diameter and threaded nature of through axles also enhance their strength and durability.

Through axles are commonly found on modern mountain bikes, gravel bikes, and increasingly on road bikes. They come in various standards, with different diameters and lengths, requiring specific tools for removal and installation, typically an Allen key. The most common diameters are 12mm and 15mm for front wheels, and 12mm for rear wheels, though other sizes exist. While they require a tool to remove, the security they offer is a significant benefit for many cyclists.
