Gesellenprüfungen

Gesellenprüfungen are final examinations in German crafts and trades, conducted after completing an apprenticeship as part of the dual system. They certify the qualification as a Geselle (journeyman). The examinations are organized by the local Chamber of Crafts (Handwerkskammer) or, in some sectors, by the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK). They result in a formal certificate, the Gesellenbrief, recognized across Germany and often required for practice in the respective trade.

The exam generally consists of a practical examination and a written examination; some trades include an oral component. The content is defined by the Prüfungsordnung and the Prüfungsbereiche of the trade, aligned with the vocational training standard. The practical part tests work readiness, quality, safety, and problem solving; the written part covers theoretical knowledge, trade theory, regulations, and calculations.

Candidates usually take the final exam after completing the apprenticeship and the required practical experience. The exam is arranged by the relevant chamber; registration and scheduling occur through the chamber. If a candidate fails, retake opportunities are available, subject to rules and deadlines; fees apply.

Passing yields the Gesellenbrief, granting the status of Geselle. This credential is often required for employment in many crafts and serves as a basis for further qualifications, such as the Meisterprüfung (master craftsman) to operate a business or train apprentices.

The Gesellenprüfung is a central component of the German dual system, ensuring standardized skill levels across trades. It is widely recognized in Germany and contributes to professional mobility within the crafts sector.
