Geotõrget

Geotõrget is the Estonian term for geotargeting, the practice of delivering content, advertisements, or services based on the geographic location of a user or device. It aims to increase relevance and effectiveness by tailoring what a user sees to where they are.

Geotargeting relies on location data gathered from multiple sources, including IP address mapping, GPS data from smartphones, mobile network triangulation, and Wi-Fi positioning. The precision can range from city level to exact coordinates, and privacy protections or consent requirements vary by jurisdiction.

Common applications include online advertising, retail promotions, travel and hospitality offers, event notifications, and public information services that vary by region. In practice, a user near a store might see nearby promotions or store hours tailored to their location.

Privacy and regulation: In the European Union, geotargeting is subject to data protection rules such as the GDPR. Organizations typically need a lawful basis to process location data, must provide transparency, and should offer opt-outs. Anonymization and minimization are often employed to reduce risk.
