Genomsändning

Genomsändning, also known as "relay" or "retransmission" in English, refers to the process of broadcasting a television or radio program by a station that did not originally produce or acquire the content. This practice is common in media distribution, particularly in regions where signal coverage is limited or where content needs to be shared across different networks or platforms.

In Sweden, genomsändning is often used to ensure that viewers in remote areas receive the same programming as those in major cities. Public broadcasters like Sveriges Television (SVT) and TV4 frequently relay programs from their main studios to regional affiliates, maintaining consistency in scheduling and content. This method is also employed during live events, such as sports broadcasts or news coverage, to guarantee uninterrupted transmission across multiple channels.

The process typically involves capturing the original signal from the source station and retransmitting it through another broadcaster’s infrastructure. This can be done via terrestrial, satellite, or cable networks, depending on the technology available. Genomsändning is regulated by media laws to prevent unauthorized duplication of copyrighted material, ensuring that broadcasters comply with licensing agreements.

While genomsändning helps extend reach and improve accessibility, it does not alter the original content. The term is distinct from reruns or delayed broadcasts, as it involves real-time or near-real-time transmission rather than pre-recorded material. In digital media, the concept has evolved to include streaming services, where content is relayed over the internet to multiple viewers simultaneously.
