Genomprosjektet refers to large-scale research initiatives aimed at mapping, sequencing, and analyzing the complete genome of an organism, most often humans. The aims include creating reference genomes, cataloging genetic variation, and understanding how genes, regulatory elements and non-coding regions influence biology and disease. Projects are typically international collaborations that combine high-throughput sequencing, bioinformatics, and biobanking, with data shared through public repositories.

Historically, the most prominent example is the Human Genome Project (HGP), conducted from 1990 to 2003, which produced a reference human genome and laid the groundwork for modern genomics. Since then, follow-up efforts have expanded to population genomics, broader cataloging of human variation, and disease-oriented programs such as cancer genomics consortia and large biobank initiatives. For example, the 1000 Genomes Project sought to map human genetic variation across diverse populations.

In terms of methods, genomprosjektet relies on evolving sequencing technologies—from Sanger sequencing to next-generation sequencing and, more recently, long-read platforms—that enable more complete assemblies and detection of structural variants. Analyses focus on genome assembly, variant calling, annotation of genes and regulatory elements, and interpretation of functional effects. The resulting data support research in medicine, pharmacogenomics, agriculture, and evolutionary biology.
