The approach blends elements of rim lighting, silhouette, and halation effects with foreground illumination, depending on the photographer’s intention.

In practice, a GegenlichtBacklight setup often places a primary light behind the subject to create separation from the background and to emphasize contours. Front fill light, a reflector, or a second light may be used to reveal texture, add catchlights in the eyes, or brighten the subject’s features. This combination enables a broad range of looks—from dramatic rim-lit portraits and fashion shots to softly lit silhouettes with a glowing edge.

Techniques and tools include adjusting the distance and angle of the backlight, selecting modifiers such as a snoot, grid, or softbox, and using a reflector to bounce light into the subject’s front.
