Gefäßmediziner, also known as vascular specialists or angiology specialists, are physicians who diagnose and treat diseases of the vascular system. The vascular system, or circulatory system, includes the arteries, veins, and lymphatic vessels that carry blood and lymph throughout the body. Gefäßmediziner focus on conditions that affect the flow of blood and lymph, which can impact nearly every organ system.

These specialists address a wide range of conditions, including peripheral artery disease (PAD), deep vein thrombosis (DVT), varicose veins, aneurysms, and vascular malformations. They utilize various diagnostic tools such as ultrasound (Doppler sonography), angiography, CT scans, and MRI to visualize the blood vessels and assess blood flow. Treatment approaches can include medication, lifestyle modifications, minimally invasive procedures like angioplasty and stenting, and in some cases, surgical interventions.

The training for a Gefäßmediziner typically involves completing medical school, followed by a residency in internal medicine or general surgery, and then a fellowship specifically in vascular medicine or vascular surgery.
