Gebärde

Gebärde refers to a bodily movement or posture used to express or emphasize an idea or emotion. It is a form of non-verbal communication that can be consciously or unconsciously performed. Gestures can range from simple hand movements, like waving goodbye, to complex sequences of movements that convey intricate meanings. They are an integral part of human interaction, often accompanying spoken language to enhance understanding, add emphasis, or substitute for words entirely.

Different cultures have distinct sets of gestures, and a gesture that is common and meaningful in one culture may be offensive or meaningless in another. Sign languages, such as American Sign Language (ASL) or British Sign Language (BSL), are sophisticated linguistic systems that rely entirely on gestures, facial expressions, and body posture to convey meaning. These are not simply pantomime but fully developed languages with their own grammar and syntax. In a broader sense, any intentional movement of the body intended to communicate can be considered a gebärde.
