Gankutsuou

Gankutsuou, also known as The Count of Monte Cristo, is a 2004 Japanese anime television series produced by Gonzo and directed by Mahiro Maeda. The series is a loose adaptation of Alexandre Dumas's 1844 novel of the same name. Gankutsuou transposes the story to a futuristic, space-faring setting, blending science fiction elements with the original tale's themes of revenge, betrayal, and redemption.

The narrative follows Edmond Dantès, a young and ambitious officer who is falsely accused and imprisoned. After years of suffering, he escapes and adopts the persona of the mysterious and wealthy Count of Monte Cristo. He then infiltrates Parisian society to exact revenge on those who wronged him. The anime is notable for its distinctive visual style, which incorporates elements of Art Nouveau and incorporates 3D computer graphics seamlessly with traditional animation.
