Gagnaverndarábyrgð, officially known as the Data Protection Authority (DPA) in Iceland, is the national regulatory body responsible for overseeing compliance with data protection laws in the country. Established under the Act on the Processing of Personal Data (No. 105/2018), the authority ensures that organizations handling personal data adhere to principles such as transparency, lawfulness, and individual rights. Its mandate aligns with the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which Iceland adopted as part of its legal framework, facilitating cross-border data protection cooperation.

The Data Protection Authority operates independently, reporting to the Alþingi (Icelandic Parliament) through the Minister of Justice. Its core functions include investigating data breaches, issuing binding decisions, and providing guidance on compliance. The authority also conducts inspections of organizations processing personal data, particularly those in sectors like finance, healthcare, and telecommunications, where sensitive information is prevalent. Public and private entities must register with the DPA if they process personal data on a large scale or for commercial purposes.

In addition to enforcement, the DPA promotes awareness through educational initiatives, workshops, and public reports. It collaborates with international counterparts, such as the European Data Protection Board (EDPB), to harmonize standards and address emerging challenges in digital privacy. The authority’s decisions are binding, and non-compliance may result in fines or other corrective measures, though penalties are generally proportional to the severity of the infringement.
