GSDt

GSDt refers to a specific genetic mutation found in certain breeds of dogs, most notably the German Shepherd. This mutation is associated with a condition known as degenerative myelopathy (DM). Degenerative myelopathy is a progressive neurological disorder that affects the spinal cord, leading to a gradual loss of function in the hind limbs.

The GSDt mutation is inherited in an autosomal recessive manner, meaning a dog must inherit two copies of the mutated gene, one from each parent, to develop the condition. Dogs that are carriers possess one copy of the mutated gene and one normal copy; they typically do not show symptoms of DM but can pass the mutated gene to their offspring. Genetic testing is available to determine a dog's status for the GSDt mutation, which can be a valuable tool for breeders aiming to reduce the incidence of the disease in their lines.

Symptoms of degenerative myelopathy usually begin to manifest in middle-aged dogs, typically between the ages of seven and eight years, though onset can vary. Early signs include hind limb weakness, unsteadiness, and difficulty rising. As the disease progresses, it can lead to paralysis of the hindquarters. While there is no cure for degenerative myelopathy, supportive care and physical therapy can help manage symptoms and maintain a dog's quality of life for a period.
