GPLversion

GPLversion refers to a specific iteration or release of the GNU General Public License (GPL). The GPL is a widely used free software license that grants users the freedom to run, study, share, and modify the software. Different versions of the GPL exist, each with its own set of terms and conditions that govern the distribution and modification of software licensed under it.

The most significant versions are GPLv1, GPLv2, and GPLv3. GPLv1 was the initial release, established in 1989. GPLv2, released in 1991, introduced important clarifications and addressed issues related to the use of GPL-covered code in different operating systems. GPLv3, released in 2007, was a more substantial revision, aiming to address new challenges such as software patents, digital rights management (DRM), and the patent provisions in the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).

Each GPL version has different compatibility implications with other licenses. For instance, GPLv3 is generally not compatible with GPLv2 unless specific exceptions are made, meaning code licensed under GPLv3 cannot typically be combined with code licensed solely under GPLv2 without violating the terms of one of the licenses. Developers and users must be aware of the specific GPL version applied to a piece of software to ensure compliance with its licensing terms.
