GNSSsüsteeme, short for Global Navigation Satellite Systems, are satellite-based navigation systems that provide autonomous geospatial positioning with global or near-global coverage. These systems allow electronic receivers to determine their location, velocity, and time on Earth. The most well-known GNSS is the United States' Global Positioning System (GPS). Other major GNSSs include Russia's GLONASS, Europe's Galileo, and China's BeiDou Navigation Satellite System.

GNSSs work by triangulating a receiver's position based on signals received from multiple satellites. Each satellite transmits precise timing and orbital data. A receiver on Earth picks up signals from at least four satellites. By measuring the time it takes for the signals to arrive from each satellite, the receiver can calculate its distance from each one. Using these distances and the known positions of the satellites, the receiver can then compute its own precise location in three dimensions.

The applications of GNSSs are vast and diverse. They are crucial for everyday technologies such as car navigation, smartphone location services, and fitness trackers. Beyond consumer use, GNSSs are indispensable in fields like surveying and mapping, agriculture for precision farming, aviation and maritime navigation, disaster management, and scientific research. The accuracy and availability of GNSS have revolutionized many industries and continue to be a cornerstone of modern technology.
