The idea emphasizes understanding processing activities in their broader regulatory and operational environment.

Key components typically associated with GDPRcontext include the lawful basis for processing (such as consent, contract, or legitimate interests), purposes of processing, the categories of data involved, data subjects and data controllers, data flows between systems and third parties, security measures, retention schedules, and transfer mechanisms for international data transfers. It also encompasses data subject rights management, transparency obligations, and documentation required for accountability, such as records of processing activities and data protection impact assessments.

In practice, GDPRcontext can be used to support privacy-by-design and privacy-by-default approaches, risk assessments, data mapping efforts, and the governance of processing activities within compliance tooling.
