It describes the distance from the optical center of a lens to the focal point where parallel rays of light converge after passing through the lens. In simpler terms, it dictates how "zoomed in" or "zoomed out" an image appears.

A shorter focal length results in a wider field of view, meaning more of the scene is captured in the image. This is characteristic of wide-angle lenses, which are useful for landscapes and architectural photography where you want to encompass a broad area. Conversely, a longer focal length produces a narrower field of view, magnifying distant objects. This is the principle behind telephoto lenses, commonly used in wildlife and sports photography to bring subjects closer.

The focal length is typically measured in millimeters (mm). For example, a 50mm lens on a full-frame camera is often considered a "standard" focal length, mimicking the perspective of the human eye. Lenses with focal lengths significantly shorter than 50mm are wide-angle, while those with significantly longer focal lengths are telephoto. Zoom lenses offer a variable focal length, allowing the photographer to adjust the angle of view without changing lenses.
