Full-frame refers to a digital image sensor size that matches the traditional 35mm film frame, approximately 36 by 24 millimeters with an aspect ratio of 3:2. The term arose as digital cameras began adopting sensor sizes intended to replicate the look and field of view of 35mm film, providing a familiar reference point for photographers and filmmakers.

Compared with smaller sensors such as APS-C or Micro Four Thirds, full-frame sensors offer a wider field of view for a given focal length and typically deliver improved image quality at higher sensitivities due to the larger photosensitive area. They also enable greater dynamic range. However, for the same framing and aperture, full-frame sensors generally produce a shallower depth of field, which can yield more background blur. To achieve a similar depth of field on a smaller sensor, a photographer may use shorter focal lengths or smaller apertures, affecting exposure and perspective.

Lenses designed for full-frame cameras are built to cover the 36 by 24 millimeter sensor area. Lenses not intended for full-frame can cause shading or corner softness if the image circle is insufficient for the larger sensor. In practice, cameras marketed as full-frame support a wide ecosystem of lenses calibrated for 36x24 mm sensors, including many labeled specifically for full-frame use across major brands.

In video and cinema contexts, full-frame terminology describes 35mm-sized sensors used to capture imagery; some productions employ larger formats for particular aesthetic or technical reasons, while others rely on formats that offer different balance between field of view, depth of field, and resolution. The sensor size influences price, body design, and lens choices, making full-frame a defining feature of its class.
