Fékhatáscsökkenés

Fékhatáscsökkenés is a Hungarian term that translates to "braking efficiency reduction" or "brake fade" in English. It refers to a temporary or permanent loss of braking power that can occur under certain conditions. This phenomenon is most commonly associated with the heating of brake components, particularly the brake pads and rotors.

When brakes are used repeatedly or under heavy load, such as during downhill driving or aggressive braking, the friction between the pads and rotors generates significant heat. This heat can cause the brake fluid to boil, leading to the formation of vapor bubbles. Because liquids are generally incompressible while gases are compressible, these bubbles can significantly reduce the hydraulic pressure transmitted to the brake calipers, resulting in a diminished braking force.

Another cause of fékhatáscsökkenés is the glazing of brake pads and rotors. This occurs when the surfaces of these components become overheated and hardened, creating a smooth, glassy surface that reduces friction. Water contamination on brake surfaces can also lead to temporary fékhatáscsökkenés, as the water acts as a lubricant, reducing the effectiveness of the brakes.

Symptoms of fékhatáscsökkenés include a spongy or soft brake pedal, a reduced ability to slow down the vehicle, and sometimes unusual noises. It is a critical safety concern, and drivers should be aware of the conditions that can lead to it and take appropriate measures, such as allowing brakes to cool down, avoiding excessive braking, and ensuring the braking system is well-maintained.
