Fæceskontrol

Fæceskontrol is a term used in Danish-speaking contexts to describe the systematic collection, handling, and laboratory analysis of fecal samples. The aim is to monitor health status in humans or animals, detect infectious agents, assess gut microbiology, or ensure environmental and food-safety standards. In clinical settings, fæceskontrol supports the diagnosis of diarrheal illness, parasitic infections, and colorectal disorders by enabling tests such as microscopy, culture, antigen detection, and molecular assays. In environmental and public health applications, fecal monitoring can track contamination of water supplies, monitor wastewater and sewerage systems, assess sanitation effectiveness, and support outbreak investigation.

Sampling and handling are critical aspects: samples are collected with informed consent where applicable, stored under appropriate conditions, and transported to accredited laboratories. Analytical methods depend on the objective and may include parasite egg counting, bacterial culture, PCR or sequencing for pathogens, toxin assays, and metagenomic analyses of the fecal microbiota. Quality assurance involves standardized protocols, use of positive and negative controls, participation in proficiency testing, and compliance with biosafety guidelines.

Limitations and considerations include variability in stool composition, intermittent pathogen shedding, and delays between collection and analysis, all of which can affect sensitivity.
