Funkstrecken

Funkstrecken (singular Funkstrecke) is a German term used in telecommunications to denote a radio link—the wireless connection between two or more sites used to carry data, voice, or video. The term is generic and can refer to a point-to-point link, a point-to-multipoint installation, or a network of relays that extend coverage.

A typical Funkstrecke consists of a transmitter, a receiver, antennas, and mounting hardware, along with radio frequency equipment such as filters, synthesizers and modulation/demodulation units, support electronics, and sometimes repeaters or relay nodes. The choice of frequency band (for instance microwave or millimeter-wave, or lower VHF/UHF bands) defines range and capacity. Link budgets, modulation and encoding schemes, and synchronization determine performance.

Line-of-sight is often required for high-capacity microwave links; weather, rain, and distance affect reliability. Digital backhaul uses error correction and traffic management. Security features such as encryption are common in modern Funkstrecken.

Common applications include backhaul connections in mobile and fixed networks, corporate campus networks, broadcasting distribution, telemetry and control in industrial settings, and transport networks such as railways and logistics.

In many countries, Funkstrecken operate under national spectrum regulation, with licences for licensed bands and rules for interference protection.
