Funkmast

Funkmast, literally “radio mast,” is a tall structure used to support antennas for radio, television, and telecommunication transmissions. It serves as a fixed platform in a network to radiate signals over large areas and to host multiple antennas at different heights.

Most Funkmasten are designed as steel lattice towers, monopoles, or reinforced concrete structures. They can be guyed (stabilized by guy wires) or self-supporting. Heights vary widely, from tens of meters to well over 300 meters for major broadcasting installations. The mast carries antennas at various levels, with a base building or equipment shelter housing transmitters, feeders, and power supplies. Protective fencing, lightning protection, and anti-climb features are commonly employed.

Functions and applications include broadcasting radio and television, supporting cellular and mobile networks (2G/3G/4G/5G), and providing point-to-point microwave links. Some masts host multiple antennas for different operators and services on a single structure. Antenna design and placement are optimized to minimize interference and maximize coverage, considering factors such as azimuth, polarization, and height.

Operations and safety involve management by broadcasters or telecommunications operators, with regular maintenance, inspections, and safety protocols. Access is restricted, and equipment rooms require authorized personnel. In aviation zones, mast locations are coordinated with aviation authorities and indicated on navigational charts. Environmental impacts and local planning rules govern siting, modification, and removal.

History and significance reflect the growth of radio broadcasting and mobile communications, which spurred extensive construction of tall masts worldwide. Developments include shifts from traditional lattice towers to hybrid and monopole designs and increasingly multiband, multicarrier antenna configurations to support diverse services.
