Frostwarden

Frostwarden is a fortified settlement and weather observatory in the northern highlands of Eldoria. Perched on a granite spur above Frost Valley, it guards the primary pass through the Icecrest Mountains and has long served as both military outpost and scientific station. The architecture emphasizes resilience to cold, wind, and snow, with thick walls, sloped roofs, and narrow courtyards.

Frostwarden was founded in the early medieval period by a mounted order known as the Wardens of the North to secure the Icepass. It grew around a keep and a practical observatory, then expanded under successive rulers. The fortress withstood sieges and avalanches and later became a center for frost observation and record-keeping, contributing to regional navigation and climate data.

Located at roughly 1,200–1,400 meters above sea level, Frostwarden experiences a subarctic climate: long winters, short summers, and frequent blizzards. Snow cover persists for most of the year. The surrounding valley includes conifer forests, frozen streams, and occasional glacial features that influence local weather patterns.

Key features include the Ice Gate, the Frost Vault, and the Weather Tower. The observatory houses ancient instruments and a modern meteorological station. The walls are constructed to resist frost heave and heavy snow loads, with defensive bastions sited to defend the Icepass.

Frostwarden maintains a small garrison and a seasonal market that serves travelers and nearby settlements. Its economy centers on timber, mineral extraction from the surrounding hills, and provisioning for northern routes. It is governed by the Frostwarden Council, with a resident commander and appointed officers.
