Frostlish

Frostlish is a constructed language developed for the fantasy series the Frostgate Chronicles. Created to accompany a northern setting, it is presented as the traditional tongue of several clans and scholarly orders. The language is designed to evoke the themes of winter, endurance, and ritual precision, while remaining learnable for readers and players.

Phonology features a compact inventory of consonants including p, t, k, s, l, r, f, h, with occasional j and w in loanwords. The vowel system comprises five qualities a, e, i, o, u, with length distinctions in older inscriptions. Stress is usually penultimate, though some dialects shift stress for emphasis. Frostlish is written in the Glacial Script, a rune-like alphabet used on monuments and manuscripts, and it also appears in modern typeset form using Latin letters.

Grammatically, Frostlish is largely analytic with SVO word order. Nouns show number through optional plural markers; there is no grammatical gender. Verbs employ a small set of aspect and tense particles positioned before the main verb, allowing speakers to express completed actions, ongoing states, and future events. Adjectives follow the nouns they modify, and pronouns distinguish inclusive and exclusive forms in the first person plural.

In the fictional universe, Frostlish appears in ceremonial songs, legal codes, and historical inscriptions. Linguists within the narrative study its structure to understand ancient history, while translators work to general audiences. The language is described as relatively regular, with occasional irregulars preserved for poetic effect.
