Frostcoated

Frostcoated is a term used in the coatings industry to describe a class of surface finishes that imitate or incorporate frost-like crystal structures on a substrate. The finishes can be decorative, providing a frost-inspired appearance, or functional, offering texture and potential environmental benefits depending on formulation.

Most frostcoated formulations combine a resin matrix (acrylic, epoxy, or polyurethane) with inorganic or organic microcrystals and mineral fillers such as silica or mica. Pigments may be added to control color and brightness. Application methods vary: spray coating, dip coating, or powder coating, followed by curing at room temperature or elevated temperatures. Some processes use nanostructured layers deposited by sputtering or vapor deposition to achieve finer crystal patterns.

The finished coatings typically exhibit a frost-like roughness with light scattering that gives a matte, crystalline appearance. Depending on formulation, frostcoats may offer abrasion resistance, UV stability, and chemical resistance. Surface energy can be tuned for hydrophobic or hydrophilic behavior, and some variants are designed to reduce ice adhesion.

Applications include architectural façades, interior design, automotive trim, consumer electronics housings, and signage where a frost motif is desirable. In cold climates, frostcoated finishes aim to reduce frost growth on surfaces by minimizing adhesion or by promoting self-cleaning effects, though performance depends on environment and maintenance. The term covers diverse products from multiple manufacturers and is not a single standardized technology.
