The Fronde was a series of civil wars in France that took place between 1648 and 1653. The term, derived from the French word for “sling,” reflects the popular image of resistance against centralized royal authority. The conflicts arose during the rule of King Louis XI and continued into the early reign of his son, Louis XIV, when the young king was a child and his regent, Anne of Austria, and her chief minister, Cardinal Mazarin, exercised substantial power.
