Aristocrats are members of a social class traditionally defined by hereditary rank and landholding within a society. The term covers those who hold noble titles as well as families long regarded as part of the ruling elite by birth or status rather than by wealth alone. In many historical contexts, aristocrats formed the privileged upper tier of society and often enjoyed formal or informal privileges, political influence, and access to offices or rents from large estates.

Historically, aristocracies arose from feudal systems in which lords controlled land and owed service to a sovereign. Aristocrats played central roles in governance, sat on royal councils, administered large estates, and funded cultural and scientific endeavors. Power was often maintained through marriage alliances, patronage networks, and control of land and resources. Titles and hierarchies varied by country, with ranks such as duke, marquess, earl (or count), viscount, and baron in many regions, alongside non-titled noble classes sometimes referred to as the gentry.

In the modern era, legal privileges tied to aristocratic status have generally diminished or disappeared in many states. In constitutional monarchies and republican systems alike, aristocrats may retain wealth and social prestige, but formal political power is typically limited or open to broader participation. Hereditary titles may endure as ceremonial or cultural symbols, and some aristocrats participate in public life through elected or appointed roles. The concept remains a historical and sociological category used to describe a class defined by lineage and long-standing social status as much as by wealth.
