Frjálsósjálfstæður
Frjálsósjálfstæður is a neologism used in Icelandic public discourse to describe a stance or condition in which individuals enjoy substantial personal freedom and self-determination while remaining dependent on social, economic, and technological infrastructures. The term combines frjáls (free) with ósjálfstæður (not independent), highlighting a paradox at the heart of modern freedom: autonomy exists within networks, institutions, and obligations that constrain absolute independence.
The concept is employed in philosophy, political theory, and public debate to describe a model of freedom
Origins and reception in Icelandic discourse are recent and fluid. It appears in essays, op-eds, and discussions
