Fregattok

Fregattok is a fictional genus of seabirds that appears in worldbuilding, speculative fiction, and maritime folklore. In many depictions, fregattok are large, long-winged birds that ride thermals and skim the sea surface in search of fish.

The name fregattok combines the real-world word fregatt (frigate) with the plural suffix -ok, signaling a group and hinting at their association with coastal navies and seafaring cultures in the imagined world.

Adults are described as having dark plumage with a metallic sheen, elongated wings, and a deeply forked tail. They reach wingspans of about 1.8 to 2.2 meters and weigh roughly 1.2 to 1.6 kilograms.

Fregattok are said to inhabit tropical and subtropical coastal zones and remote island chains, nesting on cliff ledges or treetops. They feed by pursuing surface-skimming dives and opportunistic scavenging.

During migration they form flocks and display cooperative hunting strategies; males perform aerial displays to attract mates, and groups coordinate routes along favorable currents.

In fictional taxonomy, fregattok are placed in the family Fregatidae, closely related to real frigatebirds, but distinguished by a more pronounced crest and distinctive vocalizations used during courtship.

In seafaring stories, fregattok symbolize endurance and navigational luck. Sailors credit the birds with guiding winds or signaling changes in weather, and they appear in folklore, art, and nautical maps.
