Fraunhofers
Fraunhofers are a plural form used to refer to people bearing the surname Fraunhofer. The name is most closely associated with Joseph von Fraunhofer (1787–1826), a Bavarian optician and physicist who made major contributions to spectroscopy and optical instrumentation. Fraunhofer is best known for cataloging the solar spectrum and identifying hundreds of dark lines—now called Fraunhofer lines—which serve as a reference framework for identifying chemical elements in stars and for calibrating spectroscopic measurements. He built precision spectroscopes and diffraction gratings, advancing observational astronomy and optical engineering.
In the 20th century the surname gave its name to the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, a prominent German research organization
The plural Fraunhofers may also refer to multiple people with the Fraunhofer surname, including other scientists
