Fragmentaation is a neologism used in academic and policy discussions to describe the process or condition of dividing a cohesive system into smaller, often less integrated parts. Unlike standard fragmentation, fragmentaation emphasizes both the decomposition and the intentional or emergent reorganization of components, networks, or spaces. The term blends fragment with the suffix -ation, and some writers spell it with an extra 'a' to signal an active, ongoing process.

In use, fragmentaation appears across disciplines: in sociology and political science, it describes the breakdown of centralized institutions into competing, overlapping authorities; in media and communications, it refers to the segmentation of audiences and platforms that reduce shared public spheres; in information technology, to data or software ecosystems that are shard-like and interoperable only within isolated subnets; in ecology, to fragmented habitats that undermine connectivity.

Causes cited include technological change, policy divergence, economic incentives for localization, consumer preference for niche offerings, and urbanization patterns. Potential effects include decreased systemic resilience, increased innovation via diversity, and new governance challenges.

Critiques note that fragmentaation may conflate legitimate specialization and local autonomy with pathological fragmentation.
