Phototransistors are similar to photodiodes but offer higher sensitivity due to an internal amplification mechanism. Other types include charge-coupled devices (CCDs) and complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) sensors, which are widely used in digital cameras and imaging systems.

The applications of photodetectors are vast and diverse. They are essential in optical communication systems to detect modulated light signals, in medical imaging devices like X-ray detectors and endoscopes, and in industrial automation for tasks such as barcode scanning and object detection. In consumer electronics, they are found in remote controls, light meters, and automatic lighting systems. The sensitivity, spectral response, and speed of a photodetector are critical parameters that determine its suitability for a particular application.
