Fossiilimuotoja refers to the diverse shapes and forms that fossils can take, representing preserved remnants or traces of ancient life. These forms are a direct consequence of the fossilization process, which varies depending on the organism's composition, the environment it was buried in, and the geological conditions over time. Common fossil forms include actual body parts like bones, teeth, shells, and leaves, which have been mineralized or replaced by rock. In other instances, only impressions or molds of these structures are preserved, revealing their shape but not their original material.

Traces of life, known as trace fossils or ichnofossils, constitute another significant category. These are not direct remains of organisms but rather the evidence of their activities, such as footprints, burrows, trails, and coprolites (fossilized feces). These trace fossils provide invaluable insights into the behavior, locomotion, and diet of extinct creatures.

The preservation medium greatly influences the fossil form. Rapid burial in fine-grained sediments like mud or silt often leads to detailed preservation of delicate structures, including impressions of soft tissues in exceptional cases. Conversely, preservation in amber, ice, or tar can preserve entire organisms with remarkable fidelity, offering a glimpse into their original appearance.
